Nice list, upvote for Dostoevsky, but I am giving a small downvote for American Psycho.
American Psycho book was a weird one to me, like most of the book contains descriptions of various brands etc — it can get pretty boring. In my opinion the movie did a better job. Would rather recommend someone to skip it and just read Notes from the Underground.
But isn't that the real beauty of that book? Not necessarily the beauty, but the concept behind it. The author sort of mocks those individuals because they are so detached from the world. It shows how shallow they are and how they base their whole identities on brands that are absolutely meaningless...
I just think the writer kind of overdid it tbh. Maybe I was too harsh on saying I am giving it a downvote, ppl should try to read it but not to expect much in my opinion.
However I also like the point you made, it makes sense 😁.
Solid selection. Always good to see Gracián, Dennis, and Lowen being curated over the usual airport-tier fluff and standard Substack slop. Reading is important, but by itself isn't really an unfair competitive advantage. A massive library of mental models is not very useful if it stays intellectual consumerism rather than being channeled and applied. What we read is important, but I would argue that how we use it should also be considered.
Having served -- I was excited to see Jocko hit the mainstream. I still listen to Extreme Ownership once a year or so, and his podcast is probably the biggest US military-themed podcast in the world.
But also, people forget Jocko's first two podcast appearances were a couple of podcasts called the Tim Ferriss show and the Joe Rogan Experience in Fall 2015. His first time online, was on the biggest stage possible then. He had to win.
For me, I always needed to hear him talk about the pivot post-military to BBJ Gym owner, nutritional supplement company, USA apparel manufacturer, and corporate speaker / facilitator. I got the military stuff -- let's talk about the generational stuff instead. Talk to me about how you built your life between the military to your first podcast appearance. Before the Spotify wave and before your own podcast, how did you get to Tim Ferriss?
Delivers again! These will be worth saving locally (b4 it’s too late).
good to see you here Phys. hope that you have found something for yourself (and yes, creating your local library = massive ROI)
always a dope write up!
appreciate you Aman! hope everything is going well

Yet to pick up Notes from the Underground
Appreciate your feedback. It is a VERY good one.

PS: I absolutely love the title of this blog post, pretty much summarizes how reading quality material will get you ahead in the age of slop.
Struggling to select one

Just bangers off the jump
thank you!
The most life changing book i know, as a person who reads a lot:
"The Art of Living consciously", Nathaniel Branden(Father of self-esteem)
Please read and apply this book and you will do an 180 on your life.
You can tell by the book cover it is either 10/10 or not worth your time at all… going to trust you on this one. Thank you for sharing!
Great list. Power of Awareness is a new one but already reading better than Extreme Ownership. Goes to show how few ideas are truly new.
And I like how you snuck the workbook in there. 😎
Thoughts on Jocko's work so far?
